Norovirus Expected to Peak This Winter as Data Shows Earlier Appearance
The norovirus remains a health concern all year, but experts warn that it is set to peak during the upcoming winter months, reports NBC Connecticut. Sheree Piperidis, a professor of Physician Assistant Studies at Quinnipiac University, warns of a newer variant playing a role this winter season. "Older strains that people had immunity for are now changing, and so the immune system hasn’t seen this new virus," she noted. "Therefore, transmission is much easier than it has been before." Wastewater data from WastewaterSCAN is showing the virus is indeed spreading early. Piperidis and her colleagues advise that washing hands frequently can help prevent the spread along with avoiding contaminated surfaces, food, and water.
