As we move into August, OALA continues to monitor several legislative and regulatory items that will shape the assisted living landscape in the months ahead. While summer activity at the Statehouse has been limited, a number of issues remain active behind the scenes, including bathroom modernization requirements, personal needs allowance discussions, electronic monitoring proposals, referral agency oversight, and early conversations around affordability and future Medicaid rate modernization.
These topics will be part of our upcoming Board meeting on August 14, where we will review current movement, anticipated timelines, and OALA’s advocacy priorities heading into the fall. Our focus remains ensuring that assisted living providers have a clear and consistent voice as these proposals evolve. We are also watching national regulatory trends, as many states are tightening assisted living standards around staffing, dementia care, and emergency preparedness.

Older Americans Act Reauthorization Clears Senate, Moves to the House
The U.S. Senate unanimously passed the Older Americans Act Reauthorization Act, a major win for Argentum’s federal advocacy efforts. The bill renews and updates key aging‑services programs through 2030 and includes several priorities Argentum has championed, including a new White House Conference on Aging, expanded multigenerational engagement programs, and stronger national efforts to reduce loneliness and social isolation among older adults. The legislation now heads to the U.S. House of Representatives, though no formal timeline has been announced; Argentum is actively urging House leadership to take it up as soon as possible.
Why this matters to Ohio AL providers: This reauthorization strengthens the community‑based aging network that supports many assisted living residents and families, expands national efforts to reduce social isolation, enhances caregiver support, and elevates aging issues through a new White House Conference on Aging, all of which directly influence resident well‑being and the partnerships Ohio providers rely on.
